On this dark and rainy Sunday morning, I’m reminded of an essential truth that, at first, might seem like a downer but that can set you free. Here it is:
You are going to fail – a lot.
If you don’t “fail,” you’ll never reach the level of success that you’re capable of obtaining. Talk to any successful person, who is not trying to sell you a “get rich quick scheme,” and they will tell you that they’ve failed often.
Daymond John from Shark Tank said, “I’ve failed way more than I’ve succeeded.”
Michael Jordon said, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
We could go on with these types of quotes because they are the truth.
What’s sad is many people believe if they fail, they are failures. No, the only failure is in giving up.
Of course, this doesn’t mean to keep beating yourself over the head with a plan that’s not working. It means to adjust and keep moving forward to the destination you’ve set for yourself.
Notice that I did not say to change your destination. I said to adjust your plan.
Here is a counter-intuitive key to success:
Fail Forward Fast.
If, you’re struggling right now because you’ve experienced a series of setbacks, dust yourself off and get back at it. You’re one step closer to getting to where you want to be.
If you’re riding a wave of success, and haven’t failed at something recently, ask yourself if you’ve become complacent or even a little afraid, to stretch your boundaries by trying something new that has the possibility of not working.
Have a beautiful Sunday, kemosabe.
