Zen and the art of packing boxes

I had wonderful weekend packing boxes for our move to Marco Island.

So. Much. Fun.

The foreman Kalia was such a slave driver that I thought I should unionize.

She said, “I know you would have hired people to do this,” As I lugged my one-thousandth box down the stairs.

Damn straight.

She added, “But I have a particular way I want it done, and I’ll do it better than anyone we’d hire.”

I didn’t mind helping on the weekend because she worked hard packing the house all week. And it made her happy to get my help. Plus, we had fun and laughed while doing it.

The truth is that no one we’d hire would pack as she did. So Kalia is the undisputed champion. And since it was important to her, it was important to me.

While packing boxes with your wife for a few hours on the weekend is one thing, spending time doing things in your business that doesn’t generate a profit is another.

Many business owners do things they’re not qualified to do or that they could hire someone to do for them, saving time and energy to do things that impact the bottom line.

If you’re spending time building your website, editing videos, or learning a new technology, you have no business messing around with your wasting time and costing yourself DEEnero.

The exception is if you are brand new and on a shoestring budget. You might have to be a “jack of all trades,” but you want to offload non-profit-producing activities quickly and get down to the business of marketing and sales.

For example, designing a master class that attracts leads, educates prospective clients, converts qualified prospects into appointments, and then designing the marketing materials to promote it is an excellent use of time because you’re creating an asset that’ll generate ongoing revenue.

Learning how to integrate your master class registration page with your CRM and creating the technological part of the marketing campaign isn’t something you do. Yes, I can do all that stuff, but I pay someone else to take care of it for me so I can focus on the stuff that matters.

This week, make a list of everything you do that you could delegate, select one item, and get someone else to start doing it for you.

Kick butt, make mucho DEEnero!
