Unusual Speaking Gig I Have Tomorrow

Tomorrow, I’m speaking for free. Nope, not even selling anything. And it might be my most challenging audience to date.

Yes, kemosabe, I am speaking before hundreds of teenagers at my stepson, Andrew’s, high school tomorrow.

He’s a bit nervous about it. Maybe because I mentioned I was going to show baby pictures of him on some of the slides. (Yes, I am evil.)

After I’m done writing to you, I’m going to put the presentation together.

The school wants me to speak about public speaking, but I want to deliver more than that. My goals are:

1. To motivate the students to go after their dreams.

2. Teach them that they are always selling something.

3. Share a basic framework for a presentation.

How am I going to do that?

By following my template.

You see, the fundamental structure is the same whether you are selling a product, speaking to book appointments, teaching, or selling your philosophy.

It’s ALL selling, and because of that, the fundamental structure of the presentation is the same. Namely:

* A riveting opening (Big promise.)

* Who this is for

* Why you should listen to me.

* Core story

* Three teaching “chunks”

* Close

Nothing fancy. Just proven fundamentals and then a powerful delivery of the presentation is what it takes to succeed.

I’ll let you know how it goes, tomorrow.
