[Live update] Nobody likes to go first

I literally just walked off the stage to start day three of the event that I’m emceeing.

After the opening announcements, I asked audience members to go up to the mics in the aisles and tell everyone what their biggest takeaway from the event has been.

Crickets.

No one got up.

So, I immediately walked off the stage into the audience, picked someone, handed him a microphone and TOLD him to tell everyone one big idea he was going to implement. After that, someone else volunteered and then folks started lining up at the microphones to talk.

Often, you need to “prime the pump” to get the audience to take the action you want them to take. Now, here is the key:

You must MAKE the audience do what you ask them to do. You canNOT take “no” for an answer. If you let your audience get away without responding to your requests, even one time, they will become more and more non-compliant, and then you’re dead in the water.

I am well aware that there are members of my current audience who aren’t fond of me because I am continuously asking them to react with enthusiasm, and that’s okay because if I didn’t do that, results would suffer.

By the way, what I just shared with you has to do with professional presentation skills which are as important as what you say. You can have the best slide deck on the planet, but if you don’t know how to present, your sales will be far less than they could be.
