Do you remember the first time you heard a recording of yourself? Did you think, “That doesn’t sound like me?” Or, worse, think, “Ugh, I hate my voice!”?
Here is what voice-over pro, Susan Berkley has to say about it:
“There is something called vocal disparity. We’ve listened to ourselves our whole lives from inside our head, where the bones of our skull distort our voice.
And I have to confess that even as a voice and media professional, my boss used to play my show over giant speakers at the start of my radio career. So I’d be listening to the sound of my voice, and I’d think, “Oh no, they’re going to tell me it’s been horrible. I hate that voice!”
Well, people kept paying me, so I finally got over it and realized it was probably okay. That is normal. So once you get over that initial shock, as it were, you just got to get over it because it’s just how it is. We sound differently to ourselves than we sound on a recording.
And it’s not about trying to have a voice like James Earl Jones. It’s just an enhanced version of yourself.
Read that last sentence again and let it sink in.
Your voice is fine. You just need to use it to communicate more effectively and persuasively.
In the August Inner Sanctum VIP-only masterclass, Susan Berkeley will teach you how to do that. I contribute a couple of tips as well. 🙂
