Last week, Karen and I ventured out to a little restaurant in Canton, GA. While I’m sipping my mediocre glass of Pinot, (I’m always disappointed when there are no Italian wines on the menu.) I see something I’ve never seen.
A man walking into the restaurant with a monkey on his shoulder.
I couldn’t hear what was going on, but it appeared that the owner of the restaurant told the dude couldn’t come into the restaurant with his monkey.
The dude showed him an official-looking document, which I presumed proved he had a “therapy monkey” because after that he and the monkey were looking over the menu pondering what to order.
Just one- minute ago, I had a unique experience, that changed where this email was going. Let me explain.
I was going on a little mini tongue and cheek rant about all of the different types of service animals people claim they have to get around regulations, and somehow tie it in with a sales message. But then, I remembered the monkey dude’s URL which he had on his car.
Go check it out and then come back: http://monkeydoctor.net
Um, well, it turns out that the monkey’s name is Dr. Irving, and the “dude” is Bobby Manheim. Their mission? Here’s what it says on their website.
“To provide unique assisted therapy programs for children with special needs. Our goals are to offer programs promoting a positive attitude, unconditional love, and character education.”
And to think, I was going to write a sarcastic post about this guy and his monkey. So instead of a sales lesson, here is one about being human, that apparently I needed to be reminded of.
With the onslaught of media and information, we too often jump to conclusions about people, ideas and situations, based on little evidence.
We become the judge and jury in one-fell-swoop, either condemning or beatifying an individual when digging a little deeper is what is needed before forming an opinion.
Something to think about.
