Every business owner and entrepreneur needs this. In fact, it the the single most important key to your success. It’s more important than manufacturing. It’s more important than product or service delivery. It’s more important than customer service or bean counters. While all these functions are important there is ONE that rules the day.
So what is it?
It’s your ability to close sales.
The person who makes it rain is king. Everything else is just talk.
I first discovered this at one of my first jobs out of college. I was working at WHMP radio (yes WIMP, radio) and Northampton, MA. I was the promotions director and a copywriter. One day, the owner Robert F.X. Sillerman, a billionaire media mogul came to visit the station. He made the rounds politely talking to everyone on the staff but then he had a long meeting with the sales team. And after the meeting, he took the sales team to dinner.
Why? Because every other employee was an expense. The salespeople were profit centers.
You might be thinking that isn’t fair and not the right way to run a business and maybe on some level you’re right. But don’t miss the point: Your ability to close sales is the single most important function in your business and the skill you need to cultivate.
I was interviewed last week by a guru to the chiropractic niche. To my dismay, but not surprise, he told me that his docs think selling is below them. And THAT is why most ’em are struggling.
Selling your product or service to people who can benefit from it is one of the most righteous things you can do, regardless of whether you’re a butcher, baker, candlestick maker or anything else.
