When Your Co-Captain Is Silent But Terrified…

On Saturday, Kalia wanted to take the boat out.

Which, in theory, sounded lovely. Just one problem…

I’ve only had one boating lesson. And let’s just say I wasn’t exactly Captain Smooth Docking the first time around.

If we’re being honest, I should not have passed the test. But apparently the instructor thought, “Eh, close enough,” and sent me out into the world with the power to pilot a watercraft I can barely maneuver.

So when Kalia suggested we go out on the water, I was… how do I put this diplomatically?

Apprehensive to say the least.

To my credit, I didn’t say no. But I did say, “Let’s invite Todd and Erica.”

Both are seasoned boaters. Both know how to dock without scraping the hull. Both were conveniently available and kind enough to hop aboard.

And with them there, I did better than the first time. (Still not auditioning for the next season of Below Deck, but progress.)

Here’s the thing, though…

We’re going out again next weekend for Mother’s Day.

And I’ll be on my own.

It’s a little like running your business without a system.

You may look like you’re doing fine.

Your calendar isn’t empty. Revenue’s coming in. From the outside, you’re “making it work.”

But if you’re being honest?

You’re still white-knuckling the wheel.

You’re nervous every time the tides shift.

And you know, deep down, you’re not fully in control.

That’s not a business designed to scale. That’s a business designed to survive.

So today’s nudge is simple:

Stop pretending you’re comfortable when you’re not.

If your systems still depend on luck, grit, or adrenaline… It’s time to rebuild from the helm.

Kick butt, make mucho DEEnero!
