What John Candy Taught Me About Success

Every year, our family gathers like clockwork for one of my favorite traditions: watching Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

It’s a classic. Steve Martin’s straight-laced Neal and John Candy’s loveable mess Del trying (and failing spectacularly) to get home for Thanksgiving is comedy gold.

But here’s what struck me during this year’s re-watch: Neal needed Del.

Yes, Del was obnoxious, clumsy, and a walking disaster at times. But without Del, Neal never would’ve made it home. Neal’s pride and “I can handle this on my own” attitude almost left him stranded.

Sound familiar?

In business (and life), we all think we can do it solo. We set goals, make plans, and grit our teeth through the tough times, telling ourselves we’ve got it under control. But sometimes, that solo act keeps us stuck—spinning our wheels, far from where we really want to be.

Here’s the truth: getting to your goals is like Neal trying to get home. You’ll face roadblocks, bad luck, and unexpected chaos. And while determination gets you part of the way, the game-changer is having someone like Del who knows the shortcuts, the pitfalls, and how to keep you moving forward, even when the path looks impossible.

Neal learned that success isn’t about toughing it out alone. It’s about embracing the right help at the right time.

Here’s what to do: Look at your biggest goals this coming year. Are you trying to reach them solo? If so, ask yourself: Who could help me get there faster, smarter, and with fewer bumps along the way?

You don’t need to turn your journey into a comedy of errors. Seek the guidance, mentorship, or collaboration that gets you where you want to go—without sleeping in a motel with one pillow.

Kick butt, make mucho DEEnero, and don’t be afraid to bring your own Del along for the ride.
