After Kalia and I trekked on a glacier, we entered tourist heaven or hell, depending on your point of view, in the capital of Alaska.

We walked down the street, passing one jewelry store after another (Juneau must also be the jewelry store capital of the world). A young man standing outside one of the stores convinced us to come inside.

The sales pitch we got inside the store was tremendous. Those folks were hustlers in the best sense of the word.

At first, we were shown jewelry for low hundreds of dollars. Kalia picked a ring she liked and tried it on. Compliments about how good it looked on her started flowing. Kalia negotiated a better price, and then it happened.

The owner, Mehesh K, with his eagle eyes, noticed her diamond engagement ring, complimented her on it, and offered to clean it for free.

Before we knew it, we were in another section of the store with rings that were, well, substantially more than a few hundred dollars.

Kalia tried on a few of those rings and fell in love with one. Mehesh offered us a special “family” price. Kalia tried to get it lower to no avail. She negotiated and got the original $300 ring for “free.”

Sale closed.

Next thing I knew, Mehesh brought me a glass of Macallan Single Malt Scotch to celebrate.

Man, oh man, were we sold, and we enjoyed the entire experience.
