Red Sox Not So Sexy Sales Secret

I remember being heartbroken year after year as kid living in Springfield, MA as I watched my beloved Boston Red Sox lose. My dad, a diehard Yankee’s fan, always had much more to cheer about.

Fast-forward to 2004 when the “Curse of the Bambino” was finally broken. Then the Sox won the World Series again in 2007 and again in 2013 and again, last night in Los Angeles.

There were so many storylines including their thirty-million dollar a year pitcher, David Price, who was labelled as “not being able to win in the playoffs” who won two World Series games, including a dominating performance last night.

Then there was 35 year Steve Pearce, a journeyman of sorts who had bounced around from team to team. Pearce grew-up loving the Red Sox and not only won a World Series with the team, but was also named MVP.

I could talk about many success lessons inside just those two narratives, but there is one huge sales secret contained in what many of the players said when asked what made their team special. Their answer was:

“We are grinders.”

No, being a “grinder” isn’t sexy. It’s not “ninja.” But, the fact is, it is a TRUTH about being successful. 

You want more sales? Stop searching for the newest “funnel” and start grinding.

You want to put more DEEnero in your pocket immediately? You don’t need the gurus latest course. Grind some sales out by contacting your clients and prospects with an irresistible offer.

The Red Sox were also known for grinding out runs when there were two-outs. They stayed focused and continued to execute until the very last pitch. The sales application is obvious.

One final thought:

“Grinding” doesn’t mean you have dislike what you’re doing. The Red Sox players, LOVE what they do and have fun “grinding out” wins. Most of all, they love the result.
