Low Flying Owls From Hell

On Marco Island, we’ve got these low-flying owls that love to glide across the roads at night.

They wait until you drive full speed, then—boom—straight into your headlights like a daredevil with wings.

If you hit one? You’re in trouble.

Not just ethically. Financially.

They’re protected, and the fines are steep.

The thing is: they come out of nowhere.

No warning. No rhythm. No easy way to predict it.

You either stay alert… or you pay for not seeing it coming.

Same in your presentations.

The real danger isn’t the obvious objection.

It’s the slow, silent death of disengagement.

That moment when the audience mentally checks out, even though they’re still smiling and nodding.

They’re already gone. You just haven’t felt the crash yet.

What stops it?

Pattern interrupts.

Not gimmicks. Not tricks.

Here’s what they sound like:

  • “What I’m about to say may piss some of you off…”
  • (long pause, then) “You’re not going to like this—but you need to hear it.”
  • “This next part isn’t in the slides. But it’s the only thing that matters.”
  • “Let’s stop pretending for a minute.”

Each one disrupts the tempo and recaptures attention, not with volume but tension.

It signals: wake up—something real is about to happen.

Most presentations put the audience to sleep and politely hope they wake up at the offer.

Real leaders don’t hope.

They jolt people out of the trance, on purpose, by design.

If your message is important, don’t tiptoe around it.

Fly low. Fast. Close enough to make ‘em blink.
