With our trip to Thailand coming up, Kalia and I thought it’d be a good idea to learn a few key phrases in Thai. You know, the basics—“Hello,” “Thank you,” maybe “Where’s the bathroom?”
Now, let me be real with you: Kalia is trying much harder than me. She’s watching YouTube videos, practicing pronunciation, and even trying to string sentences together.
Me? I’ve barely moved past “Sawasdee” (hello), and even that gets a chuckle from her every time I try it.
But here’s what I realized: my reluctance to dive in isn’t just about learning Thai—it’s about fearing I’ll get it wrong. And that fear? It keeps me from connecting with others in a meaningful way when I travel.
And guess what? The same thing happens in sales consultations.
When you’re in a consultation, it’s easy to focus on saying the right thing. You might stress over presenting your services perfectly or avoid asking certain questions because you don’t want to sound pushy.
But here’s the truth: authenticity beats perfection every time.
Just like the Thai people would appreciate my effort (even if it’s clunky), your prospects appreciate genuine connection over a flawless pitch.
Here’s how to do it:
- Be genuinely curious. Instead of worrying about impressing them, focus on understanding them. Ask questions that show you care about their unique situation.
- Admit what you don’t know. If you’re unsure about something or need clarification, say so. Prospects value honesty more than you think.
- Focus on helping, not selling. When you come from a place of service, the right words tend to come naturally.
It’s not about saying it perfectly—it’s about showing up and making the effort.
The same goes for your consultations. Drop the pressure to be perfect, focus on connecting, and watch how much easier it becomes to guide prospects toward a yes.
