Yesterday I had a consulting client and his team in town for a day, and we accomplished a ton including repositioning his business.
What was interesting was when I made the book recommendation, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. My client had never heard of the book. At first, I couldn’t believe it, and then I realized that he was not from “our world” and that the majority of people had never heard of the book, let alone read it.
As entrepreneurs, we are often so engrossed in our business and what we do, that we take for granted our knowledge and what we know. A related point is we take for granted our skills. We think because something’s easy for us, it must be easy for everyone else.
I recently introduced my good friend Kim Walsh Phillips before she spoke at an event. Both her and marketing genius Mike “The Jewel” Stodola were thrilled with my introduction. In fact, one of the attendees commented on my introduction as well.
Heck, I had no preparation and just went up and did my thing. No big deal in my mind. Easy, right?
Yes, easy for me because I am a speaker who has been on stage for years and emceed countless events. But not easy for someone who doesn’t do it all of the time.
The point is not to take your skills, talents, and knowledge for granted. And don’t assume that because you know something, your clients know it as well.
