Big, hairy snowball rolling down the hallway

Today I witnessed something disturbing here in freezing Chicago.

I was walking down the hallway in the Westin and what do my wondering eyes do I see?

This short, bald, heavy set, hairy, very round, pale as the newly fallen snow, dude strutting his stuff in a red bathing suit – and nothing else.

Wow.

Not sure I’ll be able to get that image out of my mind. Oh, and I just realized I planted it in your head as well. You’re welcome.

Anyway, it got me to thinking about how much appearance affects your sales.

I assume you’re not doing a webinar or speech in just your bathing suit and I’m not just talking about your personal experience, although since that is a factor, we’ll start there.

I see a lot of speakers trying to look “hip.” You, know what I’m talking about. Their wearing jeans and an untucked shirt. In almost every case, this is going to hurt sales.

You can almost never go wrong if you wear a dark, well-tailored suit, and a crisp shirt. A tie might not always be necessary, but I have closed a lot of big sales wearing my famous pink tie. Women speakers will always look sharp in a dark skirt and crisp blouse.

But, as I said, there’s more to this than personal appearance. Let’s talk about how your slides look.

Do you have a consistent color scheme and a readable font?

Are you slides loaded with words or do you let images convey the points you want to make?

We’ve all heard the saying, “you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover” but guess what? People do! Appearance does matter.

“You never get second chance to make a first impression,” is a cliche but it’s so true. So why not ensure that that first impression is a good one?

Okay, I’m going to sleep now.

I hope I don’t have any disturbing hairy snowball dreams.
