A Super-Weird Analogy

Tomorrow night, we celebrate a big milestone— my son Drew’s 21st birthday—at Saawaan, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Bangkok.

Now, if you know me, you know I love a good-tasting menu, especially when it’s paired with wines. There’s something magical about sitting down and letting the chef take you on a culinary journey; each dish paired perfectly with the right glass of vino.

But as much as I was enjoying the flavors and Drew’s excitement about finally being able to sip (legally), I thought of a super-weird analogy.

Stick with me for a second…

In business, you’ve got two ways to grow your sales:

  1. Spend more time and money generating leads.
  2. Master the art of closing the sale when you’re in front of a prospect.

It’s like the tasting menu. You could add more dishes to the menu (more leads). Or you could focus on perfecting each course so every single bite delivers maximum flavor (better closing skills).

Here’s the thing: spending money on lead generation might get you more prospects, but if you’re not great at closing, you’re leaving a LOT of DEEnero on the table.

On the flip side, when you master the consultation process, you’re not just increasing sales—you’re boosting profit. You’re making the most of every single opportunity, which means more money in your pocket without spending more on marketing.

Before you pour more dollars into lead generation, ask yourself:

Am I closing enough of the leads I already have?

If the answer is no, don’t reach for the marketing budget. Reach for the sales script. Refine your pitch. Anticipate objections. Practice turning “maybe” into “yes.”

When you do this, you don’t just grow your revenue—you grow your profit. And profit, my friend, is what fuels celebrations like a Michelin-starred dinner with your family.
