Lessons from “Black Mirror”

If you’re a Twilight Zone fan, you’ll like Black Mirror, a British import showing on Netflix.

I watched an episode the other day with the story being about a high-tech dating service. The premise was, a computer would set a date for you for a specific period that ranged between a few hours and an entire year. The “system” would monitor what you liked about your date, what you didn’t, and the algorithm would eventually find you your perfect match.

The show opens with the two main characters on a very awkward date. However, as the date progresses, their chemistry builds, but, alas, the date is only for a short time, and they are separated. That’s all I’m going to tell you so as not to spoil it but suffice to say; there are many twists and turns.

In business, heck in life, we sometimes do not give something enough time to work. We want instant results and satisfaction on demand. “When it absolutely, positively needs to be their overnight” is now slow for many people.

This problem is compounded by the overwhelming amount of information we have access to, literally at our fingertips, and the plethora of opportunities we have to select from.

I know that I’ve fallen into the trap of doing hours of research to find the “best” solution to a problem, only to end up confused and unable to decide on which option to IMPLEMENT.

Yes, research is essential but needs to be limited. You will not solve your problem with research. Solutions and breakthroughs occur through consistent, focused action. (Those three words are all mission-critical.)

We need to stop going on so many “short dates,” jumping from partner to partner, and design a plan that will take us from where we are to where to want to be, and take continuous action, monitor our results, and make adjustments along the way, until we reach our goal.

On Thursday at noon ET, I will be laying out a step-by-step plan, specifically for professional services providers, that will show you how to fill your calendar with high-quality prospects and then turn those prospects into clients or patients without using manipulative sales techniques.

The truth is, the blueprint I’m going to go over will not appeal to everyone, and that’s okay. I’m not arrogant enough to believe that my system is best for everyone. However, I’m going to go over it in detail with you, so you can decide whether you want to implement it in your professional practice, with or without my help.
