Bethany told me I would make a good “skin suit”

So I want to get my haircut today, and my stylist’s assistant said two things to me that I didn’t understand.

First, she told me I was “boushy” because I was talking about making tasting menus with wine pairings. I knew it wasn’t a compliment but had no idea what she was talking about.

Then, we were talking about this woman who would follow me around from speaking gig to speaking gig and secretly take my pictures. Young Bethany told me, “She probably thought you would make a good skinsuit.”  Even though I am a horror movie fan it, took me a minute to figure out what she meant.

You see, Bethany was using terms from her generation, and not from my much older one, so I didn’t get it.

Whenever you are speaking, writing, or doing anything to market yourself, you need to make sure that you’re not using “insider language” that you understand but that your prospects don’t. It’s one of the quickest ways to make your audience tune you and your message out.

Have a great rest of your Saturday, young squire.
