Kalia and I wandered through the famous Night Market in Chiang Mai last night. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way—hundreds of booths selling everything from sizzling street food to handmade clothes to little trinkets that make you wonder how you’ve survived without them.
What struck me wasn’t just the sheer variety of what was on offer—it was the vibe.
Not a single vendor was pushy.
No one was yelling, “Buy now! Best price!” or trying to pressure us into making a decision. Instead, they all greeted us with warm smiles, invited us to look, and genuinely thanked us whether we bought anything or not.
But here’s the thing—they weren’t shy about selling either.
Their booths were colorful, inviting, and full of eye-catching displays. Many vendors had signs showcasing specials or unique features of what they offered. Some even called out politely to let us know what they were selling.
And yet, it never felt salesy.
We bought a few things here and there—some food, a couple of gifts—but what stood out most was how pleasant and relaxed the whole experience was. No stress. No awkward moments.
It was a masterclass in selling.
Here’s the takeaway: Being effective at selling doesn’t mean being a hardcore closer.
You don’t need to push people or pressure them into saying “yes.” That’s the myth that makes so many people dread selling.
Instead, think like the vendors at the Night Market. Make your “booth” (your offer, your service, your business) as inviting and compelling as possible. Let prospects know what you have to offer clearly and confidently. Be approachable and ready to guide them.
But leave the high-pressure tactics at the door.
A genuine smile and a willingness to help go further than any scripted pitch ever will. Because when prospects feel comfortable, they’re more likely to trust you—and trust leads to sales.
The vendors at the Night Market know that. Do you?
Kick butt, make mucho DEEnero!
