Fortune Cookie Marketing

I never eat the fortune cookie at the end of a Chinese meal, and unless Kalia makes me, I won’t even open it.

The truth is that taking advice from a fortune cookie could be better than following advice spewed by some marketing gurus who don’t practice what they preach.

For example, I keep seeing an ad on Facebook from one such guru who proclaims his “new” method for attracting high-ticket clients doesn’t involve using a traditional marketing “funnel.” Of course, when you click on your ad, what does he use? Give yourself a prize if you answered “a funnel.”

Then we have the Internet marketing gurus traversing around the country speaking at seminars to sell their knowledge on making DEEnero on the Internet products.

In the words of Alanis Morissette, “Isn’t it ironic?”

Let’s not forget the fine folks inside industries teaching the same worn-out strategies everyone else uses. That’s a case of the blind leading the blind.

Finally, there’s the new breed of experts who have never done anything but regurgitate what they’ve heard from other gurus. And the wheel turns round and round.

There are many costs associated with following bad advice:

  1. The cost of your time learning and implementing something unproven.
  2. The cost of investing your money.
  3. And maybe the most egregious are the feelings of disappointment or “I must be doing something” when one of the guru’s unproven schemes doesn’t work.

I’m the first to admit that I don’t have all the answers regarding growing your business. I’m not your guy if you want to drive traffic to your website. I’m the last person you should ask if you need advice on hiring and firing. Want an exit strategy? Beats me. I need advice on how to use LinkedIn to get clients. Dunno.
