Butcher, Baker, or Candlestick Maker

Closing the sale is the single most important key to your success. It’s more important than manufacturing. It’s more important than product or service delivery. It’s more important than customer service or bean counters. While all these functions are important, SELLING rules the day.

The person who makes it rain is king. Everything else is just talk.

I first discovered this at one of my first jobs out of college. I worked at WHMP radio (yes, WIMP, radio) and Northampton, MA. I was the promotions director and a copywriter. One day, the owner, the late Robert F.X. Sillerman, a billionaire media mogul, visited the station. He made the rounds politely, talking to everyone on the staff, but then had a long meeting with the sales team. And after the meeting, he took the sales team to dinner.

Why? Because every other employee was an expense. The salespeople were profit centers.

You might think that isn’t fair and not the right way to run a business, and maybe you’re right on some level. But don’t miss the point: Your ability to close sales is the most important function in your business and the skill you need to cultivate.

I was interviewed by a guru in the chiropractic niche. To my dismay, but not surprise, he told me that his docs think selling is below them. And THAT is why most of them are struggling.

Selling your product or service to people who can benefit from it is one of the most righteous things you can do, regardless of whether you’re a butcher, baker, candlestick maker, or anything else.

Kick butt, make mucho DEEnero!
