What I’m about to tell you flies in the face of everything I have ever read from the motivational self-help gurus (and you might disagree with it), but think about it before you dismiss it out of hand.
Yesterday, I had one of the most productive days I’ve had in a long time. Did I work? Come up with a new blockbuster marketing strategy? Write a sales letter that’s going to make me millions? Nope.
I sat on the couch all day and watched television.
Yep, you read that right. I watched TV all day. I started with a movie, then moved on to watching a great Atlanta Thrashers hockey game (which they won in OT), and finished up with watching the entire Academy Awards. (I totally agree with “The King’s Speech” winning best picture.)
How is this productive, you ask? Shouldn’t I have been working on my goals? Reading something of value? Being outside in the fresh air? (It was a beautiful day yesterday.)
Nope. I should have done exactly what I did because that is what my body and mind needed.
I have been burning the candle at both ends the past month or so. I’ve been working on three big launches: one for myself and two for clients, the last of which happens this week. I’ve worked until 11:30 PM a number of nights and been up really early working to boot. I tried to be super-entrepreneur, super-dad and super-friend during this time and, quite frankly, was burnt out.
I woke up Sunday, exhausted to the bone and not feeling well (and I usually feel great). My body and my mind were saying to me, “ENOUGH!” And for once, I listened. I had tickets to the hockey game I ended up watching on TV but gave those away. I did not turn on my Kindle to read one of the many business books I bought. Nope. I plopped myself down on the couch, got the remote, and started my TV marathon.
I napped a couple of times during the day. (Not during the Thrashers game of course.) Ate very lightly. Totally vegged out and just relaxed. Best of all, I did it without guilt.
The truth is, as entrepreneurs, there are going to be times we need to put the “pedal to the metal” and work our tails off for long hours. That’s just the way it is. There are going to be times when we are going to have to be out of balance. But we must also take time to rejuvenate and totally chill.
So let me ask you: are you taking time to replenish and rejuvenate your body and mind? Seriously, how are you feeling physically and mentally right now? If you are fatigued or maybe downright exhausted, plan a real break. Maybe it’s not vegging out in front of the TV all day, or maybe it is. Just do something for yourself, and do it without guilt.
As always, your questions and comments are welcome here on my blog, and I really do read each and every one of them.

P.S. One of the sharpest business women I know is having a free teleseminar this Thursday where she is going to talk about how you can “fill your stadium” with raving fans who pay, stay, and refer. This woman went from dead-broke, on the verge of bankruptcy, to making over 7 figures in less than a year …all without spending a fortune on traditional marketing. She is the real deal, and she can help you. Click here to register for her call. You’ll be really glad you did.
PPS. Hey, and not only register, but actually show up for the call. There is a disturbing trend of people not keeping commitments they’ve made to themselves. They sign up for a training they know can help them but then don’t show up. Successful people don’t do that. They keep their commitments.

Dave,
I agree wholeheartedly. There is nothing wrong with taking down time, in fact, I advise my clients to schedule in large amounts of “white space” every single day. White space is comprised of chunks of time with absolutely nothing scheduled. If you want to trudge away and keep working, you can, but I encourage you to take this time to do brainless activities or nothing at all.
Our most productive time is often when we unplug and just take care of ourselves and we shouldn’t feel guilty about it. This prevents burnout and allows us time for actual living. What does it matter how successful one is professionally if your health and personal quality of life is blah? Take care of yourself first and foremost.

No doubt about it. Once again you’ve hit the nail on the head. It really is amazing how we try to ignore the signs our body is giving us to take a break.
I find that when I take an unplanned break, it only makes me more weary because I tend to mentally beat myself up for doing so. Your suggestion to plan some time off is what so many of us need to recharge !!

It’s a known fact that we need to take time off and recharge the batteries every so often.
Some of my best ideas came to me while on vacation or following a log weekend.
Our bodies require this same down time everyday in order to function properly. If we don’t take the needed 6 to 8 hours on a daily basis our bodies and minds quickly begin to breakdown.

Best advice I’ve seen in a long time – especially the part about not feeling guilty.

Glad you took the day off Dave. You do deserve it. Sounds like your perfect day! All that was missing was a great meal at the end of it.
A big part of this for me is being more realistic about what’s possible with the time I really have set aside for projects.
I just pushed a launch back a week because it was just requiring too much push all at once and it didn’t feel good. My fear tells me I have to do everything right now and after years in biz, I now finally know that’s not true.

I totally agree with what you said! If they treated dogs the way us entrepeneurs sometimes treat ourselves, they would call in the animal welfare for sure.
Imagine a job ad for entrepeneur: WANTED: Person to work 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, no rest included, no breaks to be taken, and maybe even no lunch either. Complaining not allowed. Sore back and neck are a requiremnet. Must be able to put up with whinging from family/friends that they are wasting their time. Please enquire within
I think that we totally need to relax and eat chips and chocolate and wear our fluffy pyjamas around the house, without being called lazy by others. That’s what its all about. Then when we get back to work we go back in with a fresh new perspective and lot sof energy (and then we work till we collpase again

I find that I need to do whatever I feel like at least once a week. Sundays are no work zone at our house,…do whatever we feel like, no clocks, no worries, no quilt. No phones, no laptops, one full day to re-juvenate. I was going doublespeed 7 days a week for waaay too long and came as close to a nervous breakdown as one can come- burnt completely out- didn’t want to see or talk to anyone- BIG wake up call. Will NOT do that again!

I agree. Sometimes a little down time can work wonders.
