The Big Apple, the Ramones, a Pop Quiz & Contest

On Friday, my daughter and I are flying to New York City for the weekend. She’s never been so we’ll do all the touristy stuff but the highlight in addition to eating a NYC hotdog, is we’re going to see the musical “Wicked.” I saw it on Broadway a couple of years ago and was blown away. I’m looking forward to seeing it again and watching Gina’s reactions to it.

Gina is serious about wanting to be an actress and my guess is this is going to fuel her desire. Of course, I am fully supporting her in the pursuit of her dream and telling her that she needs to study her craft, work hard and get out their and perform.

She’s doing just that.

Last Sunday, my baby girl had her third electric guitar recital. While all the other kids were playing Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift crapola, Gina had practiced,  “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones. (My son wanted her to play “Beat On The Brat With A Baseball Bat” but we didn’t think the suburban Atlanta moms  would quite get that.)

Gina was supposed to open the show but her guitar teacher had not arrived and he the song  she was going to play to.  Of course, Gina was already nervous about playing in front of 50 people and this did not help.

I told her to breath deep and visualize her perfect performance. (She had been visualizing before the show as well.) As with almost every problem, there is a solution – and I had it. I quickly took out my trusty iPhone, logged onto iTunes, bought the song and in about 2 minutes it was downloaded. I gave the phone to the tech guy and told him to patch it into the sound system.

Gina walked up on stage and was ready to rock. The tech guy started the song a few seconds before he actually turned up the sound and so when the music came on, Gina was a few seconds behind. Undaunted, she caught up and played great! For the first time, she actually stood and played the guitar. In the past she sat. And, for the first time she looked up at the audience as she played.

Man oh man, was I one proud daddy.

The other day, Gina and I were talking and she said she was going to drop one of her many activities to take a SECOND acting class and then she said, “Daddy, there is a third class I want to take  so I think  I’m going teach an art class for kids and charge money for it so I can pay for that acting class myself. ” Did I mention I’m one proud daddy?  I told her I would make up any shortfall from the money she is going to earn. (Actually, I decided to put her and my son to work in my business. We are going to be sending out 5,000 postcards soon and they need stamps put on them.)

I could go on but this blog post is PACKED with moneymaking, personal development and business success lessons. How many of them can YOU spot?  Use the comment section of this blog to write down all of your answers.

Everyone who makes a legitimate comment will get a copy of an AMAZING interview I did with businessman extraordinaire, Matt Furey, about the power of wealth attraction. The person who submits the most lessons (good lessons as judged by me) will get a FREE, 30 minute private phone consultation with me – this has a value of $500 but could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to you.

So read this post again and then start commenting.

Good luck!

Dave Dee

P.S. The contest ends on Friday and I will announce the grand prize winner on Monday when I get back from the Big Apple.

    Be proud of your accomplishments
don’t do things everyone else is doing
    Find your niche
    know your outcome
    Follow tour dream
Do what it takes (ethically) to achieve your goals
There’ll be road bumps on the way work past them
Be willing to make sacrifices to get what you want (again ethically)
Try things you’ve never done before
    practice your craft
    Adapt
do things now and again to spark your dream
Take time out to enjoy life

Awesome post Dave – I love that you are taking her to NY and know the two of you will make lasting memories – be sure to take lots of pictures!

Here is my analysis of the marketing and life lessons in the post:

Taking time to spend with your family and making them a priority in your life is the #1 Key to success in your business.

Freely sharing resources that you have that you know will be a benefit to someone else in their pursuit of their dreams will pay itself forward in your business 100 fold

Don’t dwell on a problem and never let it stop you, find a simple solution

Sometimes you have to drop other activities that are not supporting your path to fulfilling your dreams in order to carve out the time you need to participate in activities that do

Creatively find ways to develop the resources you need to pursue your dreams

Wow your family with your passion to gain their full support of you while you are actively pursuing your dream

Visualize what your best looks like as you practice, and it will allow you deliver rockstar quality no matter what

Even if you get off to a shaky start, you can still pull off a really great event; usually you are the only person that notices or even realizes their was a shaky start

Telling your family that you support them and are proud of them and not just assuming that they know

Looking at the resources you have available to get the job (work) done

Outsource the projects that don’t require your skillset; whenever possible do only what only you can do

Don’t let money hold you back from outsourcing – you are probably already spending money on your kids, have them help out and pay them, and let them direct and manage their money helps teach them important life skills

Help others in their pursuits but allow them the blessing of feeling like they have earned it, or paid their way

I accidentally bumped the submit button. I have more
    Leave your comfort zone occasionally
    visualize the results you desire
Get serious about what you want in life
Study tour craft and work hard
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
don’t expect help that is offered to come without a price
speak to your target market in their language
    Have a plan
Have a back up plan if the first one doesn’t work
take massive action to achieve your goals
Find people that will support you in your efforts
find others to do the things IN your business that can free up time for you to do things ON your business
Other people may mess up your plan. Its just a temporary setback.
Find people to helm make up the difference
    Get out there

Dave, it’s moments like these that can make a father pride up and even tear up. Who says men don’t cry? When you experience the true joys of watching your childrens first experiences, the most amazing bonds are formed.

    Congratulations!

My Take Away: Eat a NY Hotdog, saves money. j/k

    Dave,

Love the way you weave personal stories into your marketing messages – or maybe it’s the other way around. I try to do this with my subscribers as well.

Anyway, these are the top 7 lessons I saw as I read through your story.

    1) If you are serious about doing something, find people who are already doing it well and have a great track record and learn everything you can from them.

    2) If you want to be remembered, do something different and not the same thing that everyone else is doing.

    3) If you have a strong enough belief system (and use visualization to strengthen it), you will get the results you want.

    4) When you encounter an obstacle, don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.

    5) If you want to succeed in “selling” something, show confidence and always form a personal connection with your audience.

    6) You can have everything you want in life, if you will just help other people get what they want.

    7) Outsource the work you aren’t good at or don’t want to do whenever possible.

    Great lessons,

    Chuck

P.S. An added lesson would be to always remember why you got into business in the first place. Having toys is nice, but being able to spend time creating memories for your kids is priceless.

Great post Dave! Here are my take-aways:

    -Nurture your passions
-Make time for the important things in your life like family
    -Pursue your dreams
-You’ve got to do what it takes to learn your craft
-You have to work hard (put in time, money, energy) to achieve your goals
    -Practice
-Use what you learn – just get out there and do it
-Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd by doing something different
    -Have a back-up plan
-Be prepared to handle the unexpected
-Don’t be afraid to ask others for help (especially if it’s your Dad)
-It’s okay to be nervous – leverage that energy for your success
-If you’re going to put yourself out there, it might as well be in a big way (you can fail big or small and succeed big or small, if you’re going to do either, what not do it BIG)
-Develop personal success practices (breathing/ visualization)
-There’s more than one way to solve a problem
-Do what it takes to make your dreams a reality (even if it means you have to take a second job to fund the dream)
    -Don’t sweat the small stuff
-Switch things up now and then (sit/stand)
    -Celebrate your successes
    -Promote your successes
-Get laser clear on what you want because it will make it easy to make choices that move you forward

    PS Have fun in NY!

    Hi Dave,
Love this post, you are such a terrific and inspiring dad, who’s also an engaging story-teller! I don’t think I can compete with these guys for the contest. But I will say the lessons in here are many and I wish there were more parents like you…

And I hope you guys have an amazing time seeing Wicked, I’ve seen it twice and it’s one of my most favorite plays of all time. I have ALL the music on my iPod and still listen to it. My favorite that helped inspire me and my business was the song “defying gravity.” :-)

    1. You have to immerse yourself into a culture and even eat the local cuisine to be successful.
    2. You have to cultivate young minds.
    3. Get serious about your passion.
    4. Do activities that fuel desire.
    5. Surround yourself with with people that fully support your dreams.
    6. Coaches need to encourage further study of a desired craft.
    7. Work hard, work very hard.
    8. Get out in the world and preform what ever it is that you need to do.
    9. Take action. “She is doing just that.”
    10. Coaches need to love their work, “my baby girl”.
    11. Be yourself.
    12. Do not play “crapola.”
    13. Stay within the comfort zone of your suburban mom audience, most of the time.
    14. Be a leader and “open the show.”
    15. When a teacher can not be found, be the leader and make things happen.
    16. You should be a little nervous about preforming and scare yourself.
    17. Visualizing a desired outcome can make it happen.
    18. There is always a solution to any problem.
    19. Use technology to your advantage.
    20. When you know the answer tell the people around you how it needs to be done.
    21. Always be “ready to rock.” Any time you are in-view of your audience you must be ready to win.
    22. Be undaunted, catch up to the music if need be but with good preparation and an undaunted spirit you will succeed.
    23. Stand up, face your audience and play.
    24. Coaches be proud of you stars, they will feel your emotion and fly higher.
    25. Do not over fill your plate. Remove one thing to plug in another.
    26. Focus on you craft and get extra schooling in that area.
    27. Teach. The teacher learns more than the student.
    28. Give back.
    29. Pay your own way, it will mean more to you when it is done.
    30. Safety nets and co-signers are real confidence boosters and should be used with discretion.
    31. Learn while you are young it cost less.
    32. Work in the family business it pays triple; time with family, learning a trade, maybe some income.
    I hope y’all have a great trip.

Dave, as a born and raised New Yorker, I am going to provide you with a list of essential things you can do in the City.

Broadway show (you already have that covered)
Off Broadway (the Village and their 199 seat theaters on Mercer and Houston (pronounced Howston) appeals to the actress within Gina

Statue of Liberty (use the Circle Line Tours)

    Central Park

Empire State Building (go on a day with clear visbilty)

Ground Zero (lower Manhattan) A must to put it all into perspective.

Chinatown (the food on Mott street is like none other in the world

Yankee Stadium (uptown in the Bronx) The Yankees are the greatest sports team in history and their newest cathedral (the 2009 version which replaced the one built in the 1920′s is a billion dollar fortress not to be missed.

Madison Square Gardem (midtown). Quite a sight on its own.

The Metropolitan Museoun of Art and the Natural History Museoum (for obvious reasons)

The ubiquitous New York Hot dog (any corner and try the hot roasted nuts as well

Coney Island (you have to trek to Brooklyn for this landmark where on July 4, people from all over the world try to match the world record of eating 70 some hot dogs in five minutes or so (I have no idea why)

Grimaldis Pizza (under the Brooklyn Bridge)Perhaps the best pizza in the world
